Two topics I never stop talking about: women’s empowerment and travelling
I have travelled to 60 countries alone. At twenty I took the Trans-Siberian from Paris to Busan: two hundred hours, minus forty degrees crossing Siberia, and nobody who wanted to come with me.
The question I get every single time: “As a woman, isn’t it dangerous to travel alone?”
Sometimes it is. I have been followed by a drunk man at 3am in an empty station. I have stayed with a male couchsurfing host who had twenty glowing reviews and was not the person those reviews described. I know exactly what that calculation feels like, because I have run it myself.
I kept going anyway. Travelling alone is the only thing that ever showed me who I am: what I can handle and what I cannot, and that I am far better at figuring things out on my own than I thought. And because I was alone, people talked to me, and I made friends who still change the way I see things.
Solo travel makes you brave
That is why I started NomadHer. It exists for the woman who is out there right now, scared to take the first trip by herself. She might be Aysha, Rosa, Helene or Dahee. Wherever she is from, this is for her, so she can see how many women are already doing exactly this.
If I did it, so can you
In our own survey of more than 1,000 women, 90% had either travelled solo or wanted to. They were never the problem. Doing it alone was. NomadHer brings them together, so a first trip starts with women who have already been where she is going.
